Air Force Academy looks to future

Will you visit the Academy with a new and revamped visitors center?

The Air Force Academy's visitor center would move outside the gates of the 18,500-acre campus under a plan tied to the Colorado Springs City for Champions proposal.

The academy announced Thursday that the $20 million attraction would be located just east of the academy's northern gate at exit 156 off Interstate 25. The academy has been studying the visitor center proposal for months in a bid to boost tourist traffic to the school, which has fallen off in the wake of post-9/11 security measures.

"It gives us an opportunity to simplify our security situation," the academy's Carlos Cruz-Gonzalez in a statement. "If, heaven forbid, we have another incident like Sept. 11, 2001, and we have to close access to the installation, people can still access the visitor center."
