Justice is served: GOP favors Supreme Court more favorably than Dems

Sean Sullivan --- Washington Post

Republicans' approval of the job the Supreme Court is doing is up a whopping 21 points since last September, while Democratic approval is down 14 percent. That's all according to a new Gallup poll.

Conservatives have cheered recent rulings the court has made, such as the"Hobby Lobby" decision and rebuking President Obama over certain recess appointments. So the rise in Republican approval makes sense.

As Republicans like what they see more and more and Democrats less and less, the court is dividing the public as a whole. Forty-seven percent of Americans approve of the job the court is doing; 46 percent disapprove.

Things weren't always that way. As the following chart from Gallup shows, throughout most of the past decade, the public has been much more pleased than displeased with what it's seen from the court. As recently as 2009, the court's approval rating was 61 percent and disapproval was just 28 percent.

The Gallup poll was conducted July 7-10.
